The Power of Setting Family Wellness Goals for the New Year

As the new year unfolds, it's a great opportunity to reflect on the past year and identify areas where improvements can be made to create better health, vitality, and joy in you and your family's lives. I personally create a "vision board" using the 7-"F's"... Friends, Fun, Field, Fitness, Faith, Family, and Finance. I set 3-4 goals per category and hang my cork board in my closet where I see it every morning. Whether you create a physical board or just evaluate how you can make improvements, below are a few key points to consider.

1. Reflect on Your 'Why'

Begin by understanding the deeper reasons behind your desire for change. Identifying your motivations provides a solid foundation for your goals and keeps you focused during challenging times. For example, if your goal is to lose weight then dig deeper... what are you ultimately after? Is it to look better in a bathing suit? More energy? Keep up with your kids ? Live longer? Getting to your base "why" is important for staying motivated and taking action.

2. Set SMART Goals

Once you create a goal, make sure you expand it by making it SMART...Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. For example, instead of saying, "I want to exercise more," specify, "I will walk for 30 minutes every weekday morning."

3. Break Goals into Manageable Steps

Divide larger goals into smaller, actionable tasks. This approach makes them less overwhelming and allows for consistent progress. Celebrate each milestone to maintain motivation.

4. Create an Action Plan

Develop a detailed plan outlining how you'll achieve each goal. Include the resources you'll need, potential obstacles, and strategies to overcome them. Then, find one action you can IMMEDIATELY take and take it. For example, if your goal is to run a 5k and you haven't been doing much physical activity, then immediately go for a walk. This little action that you can take right now helps create motivation and movement toward accomplishing your goal.

5. Monitor Your Progress

Regularly assess your progress to stay on track; this is why I hang my vision board somewhere I'll see it every day. Adjust your plan as necessary, and don't be discouraged by setbacks—they're a natural part of the journey.

6. Seek Support and Accountability

Share your goals with friends, family, and chiropractor. Their encouragement and accountability can provide motivation and guidance.

7. Prioritize Self-Care

Incorporate self-care practices into your routine to support your overall well-being. This includes adequate sleep, exercise, nutrition, time in nature, and stress management. This also includes holistic care such as chiropractic, massage, and acupuncture.

8. Stay Flexible and Patient

Understand that progress may be gradual, and it's essential to remain adaptable. Be patient with yourself and recognize that lasting change takes time.

By following these steps, you can set effective wellness goals that lead to meaningful and sustainable improvements in your health throughout the new year.
