What Is Pediatric Chiropractic Care?
Pediatric chiropractic care uses gentle, low-force techniques adapted to a child’s size, age, and stage of development. For infants, adjustments involve no more pressure than testing the ripeness of a peach. There is no rotation, no audible pop, and no resemblance to adult chiropractic technique.
For older children, the Activator instrument or light manual techniques are used depending on the child’s needs and comfort. The goal at every age is to identify and address any restriction in the spine or nervous system that may be affecting the child’s comfort, development, or overall function.
At Power of Life Chiropractic and Holistic Health, both Dr. Nate and Dr. Johnson provide chiropractic care for infants and children, with every visit adapted to the child in front of us. Dr. Kandace Johnson is additionally certified by the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA), with training covering the full range from newborn assessment through adolescent care.
What Pediatric Chiropractic Care Can Help With
Chiropractic care for children is used to support a range of developmental and wellness goals, depending on the child’s age, history, and presenting concern.
Recovery from birth-related stress.
Delivery, whether vaginal or by cesarean section, places mechanical force on an infant’s head, neck, and spine. This can create tension or restriction that affects feeding, sleep, and early development. A gentle newborn assessment and adjustment can address these patterns shortly after birth.
Feeding and digestive comfort in infants.
Restriction in the upper cervical spine and surrounding musculature can affect an infant’s ability to latch, rotate the head for feeding, and find a comfortable resting position. Gentle cervical adjustment may reduce this restriction and support more comfortable feeding.
Postural development in growing children.
As children spend more time at desks, on devices, and under heavy backpacks, postural strain accumulates in the cervical and thoracic spine. Periodic assessment and adjustment during the school years can address these patterns before they become chronic.
Sports injuries and activity-related discomfort.
Young athletes place significant repetitive load on developing spines and joints. Chiropractic assessment identifies restriction or dysfunction from sports-related strain, and care supports recovery and reduces the risk of the pattern worsening with continued activity.
General wellness and nervous system support.
Many families bring their children in for periodic wellness assessments rather than in response to a specific complaint. Regular chiropractic check-ins during childhood provide a foundation of structural and nervous system health that can support overall development and resilience.
Who Pediatric Chiropractic Care Is For
Pediatric chiropractic care is appropriate for children from birth through adolescence. Common presentations include newborns with feeding difficulties, restricted neck rotation, or sleep disruption that may have a structural component; infants with colic or digestive discomfort; toddlers who have had significant falls; school-age children dealing with postural concerns, headaches, or sports-related discomfort; and adolescents managing the physical demands of competitive sport or prolonged device use.
Care is also well suited for families who want a periodic structural check-in for healthy children as part of a broader wellness approach. Not every visit requires an adjustment; assessment alone can confirm that a child’s spine is developing as expected.
You may want a pediatric evaluation if your infant has difficulty rotating the head to one side, your child complains of frequent neck or back pain, your adolescent has been told they have scoliosis and you want a chiropractic assessment, or your child has had a significant fall or sports injury that you want properly evaluated.
How We Provide Chiropractic Care for Infants and Children
A pediatric visit at Power of Life Chiropractic and Holistic Health begins with a conversation with the parent about the child’s birth history, developmental milestones, current concerns, and any prior care. Your doctor takes time with this part of the visit because the history is often where the most important clinical information lives.
Infant Assessment and Adjustment
For newborns and young infants, assessment is visual and palpatory. Adjustments use fingertip pressure only, require no rotation or audible release, and take seconds. Most infants are undisturbed, and many fall asleep during the visit.
Child and Adolescent Adjustment
For older children, the Activator instrument or gentle manual techniques are used. Your doctor moves at the child’s pace, explains what they are doing in age-appropriate language, and never proceeds with anything the child is resisting.
Parent Education
Parents receive clear guidance on what was found, what was addressed, and what to watch for between visits. Postural, sleep, and activity recommendations relevant to the child’s concern are provided at each appointment.
What to Expect at Your Child's First Chiropractic Visit
We build first visits for children around clarity and comfort, for both the child and the parent.
We spend time understanding your child’s birth experience, development, activity level, current concerns, and what you have noticed at home. The parent’s observations are treated as essential clinical information.
Your doctor performs a gentle, age-appropriate physical assessment. For infants, this is primarily visual and hands-on palpation. For older children, it includes postural evaluation and range of motion assessment.
We explain what was found in plain language that both the parent and child can understand. For older children, your doctor addresses them directly and answers their questions before anything proceeds.
If care is recommended, the first adjustment is adapted to the child’s age, size, and comfort. Infant adjustments use fingertip pressure only. For older children, the Activator or gentle manual technique is used based on the findings.
We discuss what to expect in the hours and days following the adjustment, when to return, and what a typical care plan looks like for your child’s specific situation.
